DO YOU KNOW....
1) Hen lays egg even before they mate with the cockeral? A hen can lay eggs at the age of 5-6 months old. These eggs are not fertised and have no chicks inside.
2) Hen can only mate with adult cockerals after 8 months old. After a hen and cockeral mate, the eggs are ferterlised and have embryo (baby chick) inside the egg yolk.
3) It takes - 3 weeks (i.e. 21 days) for the embryo to become a chick inside the egg.
- 6-8 weeks for chick to grow into adult chicken
- 5 to 6 months old for hen to be able to lay egg
- 8 months for adult hen to mate with cockeral
- an adult chicken can live up to 7 years or more
5) Hen lays 2 eggs every 3 days. It lays up to 21 eggs or more.
6) Hen rolls their eggs about 3 times a day..so that the whole egg gets warmth under it. The incubator does the same way also.
7) The chick will not be able to provide enough warm for itself. They need to go back to the hen for warm or they will die. So if you are keeping a chick as pet, make sure they have enough warmth in their compound.
